Ischia, the island for the perfect romantic getaway
All its hidden bays and coves, the view of the Vesuvius and the many wellness resorts make Ischia the perfect romantic getaway. Ischia was settled in the 8th century and is the largest of the three islands off the coast of Naples, which are Capri, Procida (click here to read our blog about Procida) and Ischia.
How to get there?
We took a flight to Naples and from there you can take the hydrofoil to beautiful Ischia. If you are planning a trip to Naples, Ischia is definitely a really nice addition to your trip. After hectic Napels, the picturesque Island of Ischia with its many wellness resorts will give you a calm and relaxed feeling.
Where to stay?
During our stay in Ischia we stayed at San Montano Resort and Spa. This is definitely one of the most breathtaking and luxurious places we have ever stayed.
San Montano Resort & Spa on Ischia is a 5 star hotel overlooking the sea at the Bay of San Montano and the Gulf of Naples. The resort is surrounded by almost 7,5 acres of parkland and has a wonderful Mediterranean garden. The panoramic views are magical. There are five panoramic pools. These five panoramic pools overlook the harbour in Lacco Ameno, with the island of Procida and the Bay of Naples in the background. But there are dozens more thermal (indoor and outdoor) pools and sauna’s to discover.
San Montano resort is a perfect location for a honeymoon or a romantic getaway. Not to forget they have the most delicious homemade lemonade from their own lemon garden.

Views for days
Because of the location the views and atmosphere during sunrises and sunsets are stunning.
How to get around
In Ischia there is no need to rent a car or a scooter. The best way to go around the island is by bus. That is the preferred method to get around for locals and visitors. You can get everywhere because the bus system is really extensive. The main terminal is in the city of Ischia port and the bus system covers all the towns of the island. Another way to get around easily is by free shuttle service that the bigger resorts and hotels offer to their guests.

Top 3 things to see and do in Ischia
Bay of San Montano
This beach is located at the Bay of San Montano and it’s a really picturesque location. It is located between sea and mountain. The bay with its fine sand and crystalline sea makes a natural and beautiful setting.When you stay at San Montano or another hotel with this service you can get there whenever you want with the Hotel’s free shuttle. There are convenient sun loungers, umbrellas and beach towels at their disposal for comfortably spending the day at the beach.
Visit one of the many spas
Like we stated before, Ischia is the perfect island for a romantic and relaxing getaway. The island’s many spas are what attract most visitors to the island. On the island you can find over 150 spa operators and an endless variety of health and beauty treatments. Ischia is a true spa paradise with natural resources, the island has 56 different mineral springs across the island’s slopes and beaches.
Lacco Ameno
Lacco Ameno is the smallest town of Ischia, but definitely a must see. In our opinion Lacco Ameno is the most beautiful and colorful town of Ischia. The town is in between several hillsides and beaches. So after you walk around in this town you can take a refreshing dip in the water. When you do that you can take a good look at the symbol for the entire town ‘Il Funo’, a mushroom rock in the water. It looks like a colossal fungus that is shaped by the water through centuries of sea erosion of the lower part.
Besides these three things there are a lot more ways to discover the island. For example you can book unique experiences and excusions at your accommodation. From hikes and wine tours on land to scuba diving and fishing with local fishermen in the surrounding waters. It is even possible to surprise your spouse/traval companion with a helicopter ride.
Where to eat?
Franco’s restaurant – This restaurant is located at San montano resort. It has the most amazing views and delicious food. This kitchen is contemporary and international with its roots steeped in the culture of the Mediterranean. To top a culinair evening of you can watch the sunset with a cocktail at the sunset lounge. If you are looking for something simple San Montano does have other options with a second restaurant or Pizza bar near one of the many pools. A last you can order roomservice and dine from your own balcony.
Da Cocò– This restaurant offers dishes that are simple but delicious. It is the favorite restaurant of many locals because of the excellent quality and affordable prices. Da Cocò is located directly below Castello Aragones.
La Cantinola Di Zio Jack – This restaurant is a real farm restaurant that serves local country dishes but in an elegant way. They have excellent pasta and pizza. This restaurant is located near Forio.
Best time to travel
The best time to travel to this island is from May – October. In these months you will have lots of sun and limited rainfall. We visited in September and the weather was perfect.
Covid-19
Procida, Italy’s next capital of culture, already finished vaccinating all its residents. When you are an European citizens or a resident of the EU, UK, and Israel you will be allowed to enter for leisure if you meet one of the following conditions:
- Certification that you are fully vaccinated against Covid19
- Negative Covid-19 test taken 48 hours before departure
- Certification of having recovered from a Covid-19 infection within the last six months
When it comes to Covid19 the situation can always change, so check the travel advice for your destination close to your departure.
